ONE OF MANY SUCCESS STORIES.
Felix A Bonne Carcases aged 59 is a former University professor and member of the group Internal Dissidents Working Group for the Analysis of the Cuban socio-economic Situation.
He was detained on 16 July 1997 along with three other members of the group after issuing a critique of a document disseminated for the Fifth Congress of the Cuban Communist party. On 23 September 1998 all four members of the group were formally charged with "other acts against state security", in relation to a crime of "sedition". He was sentenced to four years' imprisonment and is being held in Prison de Ganja, Ganja prison Havana province.
Amnesty International believes that Felix Carcases and sixteen other individuals named in the document Cuban Prisoners of conscience must be released are prisoners of conscience, detained solely because of their peaceful attempts to exercise their rights of freedom of expression, association and assembly, and is calling for their immediate and unconditional release.
Various groups around the world have been asked to adopt these prisoners. Newcastle Amnesty group has adopted Felix Carcases and campaigns for his release.
Press release: Newcastle Upon Tyne Amnesty group. Newcastle Amnesty group are celebrating this week after their adopted "prisoner of conscience" Felix Bonne Carcases was released from prison in Cuba.
