Thame Group Newsletter

February 2001

Our next meeting

will be at 8.00pm on

Wednesday, 28th February

WONDERFUL NEWS!

STOP PRESS!

Our Turkish prisoner Eşber Yaĝmurdereli

has been released. Many thanks to all of you who wrote letters to the authorities on his behalf.  Naturally, we can stop writing now but we have been asked to keep a watching brief on this case, because Esber's release is conditional on his not committing a similar 'offence' (i.e. speaking out on the causes he believes in) over the next three years.

Election of officers

It was nice to see plenty of people at the January AGM but the line-up of the Group's Officers is unchanged with

·        Jeannette Watson in the Chair,

·        Liz Wager as Secretary and

·        Owen Davies as Treasurer.

The group expressed thanks to these three for their work for the group and for being prepared to stand again (mutterings were heard that we'd like some new faces next year, so please start thinking about this and talk to any of the officers to find out more about what the job entails).

Amnesty Youth Conference 2001

Thame Street Collection

We have booked Saturday June 30th for a street collection.  Please mark this date in your diary.  We'll be seeking volunteers to rattle tins nearer the time!

Future event

We plan to hold an 'Any Questions?' style meeting for the prospective parliamentary candidates, probably sometime in March. We hope to team up with other voluntary organisations to ask the candidates their views in the run-up to a likely General Election later this year.

Further details will follow.

We meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month at 8.00pm

in the room above the Swan Inn on the Upper High Street

Everyone is welcome!
