The following is a response we received from Senator Lincoln Chafee to a letter we sent to members of our congressional delegation concerning our India case.
February 7, 2001
Thank you for writing to alert me to the imprisonment of Noor Mohammed Karwal. I appreciate the significant human rights advances Amnesty International has achieved through its letter writing campaigns. I hope you will excuse my delay in responding.
In response to my inquiry in your behalf, State Department officials have assured me that they have urged the Indian government to grant free and fair trials to all people arrested in India, particularly those arrested under the Public Safety Act, as Mr. Karwal was. Please be assured that I will continue to monitor this situation, with the goal of promoting the rule of law, including fair and timely trials.
Thank you again for getting in touch.
Sincerely,
Lincoln D. Chafee
