Our annual Write-a-thon for Human Rights will be held on Sunday, December 9, from 1 to 5 pm, at the Parish House behind the First Unitarian Church. The Parish House is on Benevolent Street, near the corner of Benefit.
We will write letters on behalf of ten prisoners of conscience from countries around the world: Burma, Turkey, Tibet, Egypt, and more. All materials will be provided, as well as delicious refreshments. At 3 p.m, we will pause for our guest speaker to light our ceremonial Candle of Hope. Our guest will be Shanaz Bina, Executive Director of the Persian Cultural Foundation, which was formed to promote better understanding between the Iranian community and other cultures.
This is a family event, so bring your kids, your partner, and anyone else you can rustle up.
We urgently appeal for your help. The Write-a-thon is Group 49's annual fundraiser. Enclosed here you'll find a pledge form. Please get as many people as possible -- friends, neighbors, family, co-workers -- to sponsor you. If a sponsor pledges to give you $1 per letter, you can raise $10, because you will write 10 letters. You need only write 10 letters, but if you get 10 sponsors, each pledging $10 for the same 10 letters, you can raise $100! This is our major way of raising the money we need for our expenses -- postage, copying, paper, etc., as well as the cost of our telephone, which enables people to phone us. (We make no outgoing phone calls on the Amnesty line, 274-3739.)
If you can't come to the Write-a-thon, please sponsor someone else -- send us a check for as much as you can spare.
