"Constant action generates effective pressure. More than 40,000 individual prisoners have been helped by Amnesty International since our founding in 1961. Each prisoner of conscience is a person -- a name, a face, a history. These people have dreams that aren't too different from yours, and they deserve a future. These aren't faceless masses. They're men, women, and children who need help. Help for individuals from individuals -- it's at the very heart of our philosophy. That's why we count on the help of individuals just like you for our power. Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people acting on the conviction that neither governments nor opposition groups may deny individuals their basic human rights. Join us."

NEWS FLASH:
Reform movement gains three seats on the AIUSA Board of Directors

We are pleased to announce the election of three members of the 2005 Reform Slate to the AIUSA Board of Directors. Tram Nguyen and Simon Billenness were elected to 3-year terms, and Angie Hougas was elected to a 1-year term. Jason Sengheiser is the first alternate. Tram and Simon received the two highest vote totals of all candidates.

The results show that many AIUSA members are deeply concerned about restoring AI's focus on work on behalf of individuals and promoting grassroots activism, shared leadership, and open and accountable decision-making.

Recent information from the International Secretariat, however, demonstrates that we still have significant challenges ahead of us. Particularly alarming is the decline in production of Action Files, the heart of AI's sustained work on behalf of individual victims of human rights abuses and the primary means by which AI frees Prisoners of Conscience. In 2004, the International Secretariat produced a small fraction of Action Files it had in past years, continuing a downward trend from the mid-1990s, which represents the International Secretariat's abandonment of AI's commitment to its historic focus.

Tram, Simon, and Angie will be joining the members of the 2004 Reform Slate (Steve Abrams, Govind Acharya, Rick Halperin, Phyllis Pautrat, Magdaleno Rose-Avila, and Paul Schulte) as they continue to restore transparency to AIUSA, empower AIUSA's grassroots, and refocus AI on individual victims of human rights abuses.

All of the Reform candidates and Board members wish to thank you for your support in these continuing endeavors.
