If you are doing human rights work, you are part of a movement, with all the rights and responsibilities thereof. And one of those responsibilities is to raise money. Why?

Because movements do fund themselves.

The Labor movement of the 1930's, the modern civil rights movement of the 1960's, the welfare rights movement of the 1970's, etc., etc. All of these movements were vibrant masses of energy that changed countless lives for the better, and all of them received the majority of their money from their members. That means workers funded the labor movement, African-Americans in the South funded the civil rights movement, and welfare rights recipients funded their movement.

We should fund our movement too.

As an Amnesty member working in your group, you
can raise all the money you need to:

  • Buy letter writing supplies and stamps.
  • Print flyers to advertise your group.
  • Buy drinks and snacks for group socials.
  • Subsidize one or all group members to go to the Regional Conference and/or the AGM.
  • Bring in an Amnesty trainer on the Torture Campaign, Colombia, Women's Human Rights, the Death Penalty, etc.
  • Hold a state meeting.

How can you do all this? What could be the Great Secret keeping you from all that loot?

You are doing everything you need to do to raise all the money you need….

Except asking for it!

This handbook won't add to your group's workload. It will add a new dimension to your work. You can raise all the money you need, doing everything you are doing now. You just have to ask for it. Here are some ideas how.
