Amnesty International USA Southern Region The Regional Training Group Mission Statement: Because there is a need in the Southern Region of Amnesty International USA to: · Build membership capacity for ever-more effective human rights work · Develop leadership by awakening members’ awareness of their power to affect change · Improve training quality in the region, The Regional Training Group will develop, implement, maintain, and continually assess the effectiveness of regional training programs that are congruent with the organizational and regional priorities. What the RTG Does:The Regional Training Group views training as an essential element in carrying out effective human rights work. (See Vision Statement.) The group does not advocate or condone training as an end in itself. Rather, the RTG seeks to create a sustainable training program in the region by continually developing leadership through regular educational opportunities such as a Training of Trainers and Dismantling Oppression Training. The RTG promotes a popular-education model of training that challenges the traditional didactic model of learning for both trainers and participants. To this end, the RTG develops and oversees all trainings in the region, including at the Regional Conference, Leadership Meeting, and State and Cluster Meetings, and through special initiatives such as the Human Rights Summer Camp. The RTG is responsible for the development, delivery, and evaluation of these trainings. History of the RTG: In 1998, Amnesty members from around the country came together in the National Training Working Group to discuss how training in AIUSA could be improved. As a result, in the Southern Region a new structure for creating and implementing each fiscal year’s goals was developed. The Regional Planning Group (RPG) was created and is charged with translating the broad international and national mandates into a realistic and organizationally sound plan for each fiscal year. The Regional Training Group takes the vision of the RPG each year and creates a training program that develops the necessary membership capacity and leadership ability that makes the regional goals possible.
