The Core Curriculum

As noted in the Regional Training Group’s (RTG’s) Vision Statement, goals for training in the region reflect the need for our activists to enter into a process.  Over the years the RTG has developed a Core Curriculum for trainings in the region.  These workshops are the suggested basics that all activists in the region will ideally be able to attend over any two-year period (see current training calendar, below).

The following workshops are always offered at the Regional Conference and can be anywhere from 1 ½ to 3 hours long:

Amnesty International 101 (AI 101):

This workshop gives the basics of the organization mandate and structure of Amnesty International.  It is designed for activists who are new to Amnesty.

Amnesty International 201 (AI 201):

This workshop gives a more in-depth look into the changing nature of the organization and room to explore more complicated mandate issues.

Death Penalty 101 (DP 101):

A workshop for new members of Amnesty that need more information and a safe space in which to discuss the difficult nature of starting to work against the Death Penalty.

Death Penalty 201 (DP 201):

A workshop in which activists more experienced with Death Penalty issues meet to discuss current situations and strategize for future anti-Death Penalty work.

The Human Rights Framework (HR Framework):

This workshop gives activists a historical context for their work by discussing the development of the concept of Human Rights and the history of social movements.

Nuts & Bolts 101:

This workshop is designed for new group coordinators and members.  It provides information and builds basic skills essential to starting and maintaining an Amnesty International group.

Nuts & Bolts 201:

This workshop is designed for more experienced group coordinators and members and focuses on further developing leadership skills and troubleshooting group problems.

The following two trainings are 2-3 day intensive trainings:

Dismantling Oppression Training (DOT):

The purpose of this training is to confront the oppression that exists all around and in us as activists.  It is usually an intense and life-changing weekend that starts a process of growth and healing in activists.  This process is essential for honest and effective anti-oppressive organizing.

Training of Trainers (TOT):

In this weekend-long workshop activists learn how to be effective trainers.  Designed as a way to both build leadership and improve the quality of training in the region, this training teaches a popular-education methodology of training.  After attending this training, participants will be able to successfully facilitate any of the core curriculum workshops.
